Fear of mirrors, also called spectrophobia, is a rare condition. However, unlike many other obsessive fears, it almost does not poison a person's life, and at the same time, as a rule, it is successfully treated.
Determining the causes of spectrophobia
Fear of mirrors is one of those phobias, for getting rid of which it is important to know the cause. Methods of treatment directly depend on this. If the cause is identified incorrectly, the chosen methods may be ineffective, and you will only waste your time. But the right methods will help you quickly and easily solve the problem.
Try to remember when you started to be afraid of mirrors, what this phobia is connected with in your case. Think about what is causing your concern. If you find it difficult to determine the cause, hypnosis may be required.
The reasons for the appearance of spectrophobia can be different. Remember if you have conducted Ouija sessions, wondered using mirrors. Such "entertainment" is sometimes included in the list of children's fun and can provoke the appearance of a phobia. Remember if crooked mirrors, superstitions related to this subject, myths and stories, including those about the Looking Glass, frightened you. Maybe you thought you saw a ghost or other otherworldly creature in the mirror. Finally, the reason might even be a horror movie that made a strong impression on you.
Spectrophobia treatment methods
Having identified the cause, you can begin treatment. If the fear is not too strong and is associated only with your reflection, get into the habit of smiling while looking in the mirror. Choose affirmations that will support you: "I am pleased to look at my reflection", "I look great", "The mirror shows my beauty."
Removing mirrors from your home temporarily is a good option. Leave one or two of them. Be sure to remove this item from those rooms where it scared you. As a rule, we are talking about the bedroom.
A severe phobia associated with a traumatic event can become a more serious problem. In such cases, you should not try to cope with obsessive fear on your own. See a psychotherapist for help. In such cases, the NLP method is most often used: a person is again immersed in a traumatic situation, but at the same time he can observe what is happening with a detachment. In parallel, what happened is "rewritten" in the patient's memory, and as a result he remembers a slightly different, much less dangerous situation. This removes the cause, after which the spectrophobia disappears.
If the fear of mirrors appeared in childhood, and it is difficult for a person to remember why it arose, it is appropriate to use the method of deep hypnosis. It allows you to find out the cause and eliminate the consequences.
