Psychologists have long proven that everyone lies at least several times a day. “I'm on my way,” you are lying on the phone, still very far from the meeting place. “Say I’m not there,” you ask to answer the phone when you don’t want to talk. “You look great,” you are disingenuous when asked by your friend. So why do people lie?

Lying about little things is often a convenient way to get away from a conversation or discussion of problems. Many psychologists believe that all problems need to be spoken out, but just imagine what it would be like if you told the truth every time. You would spend a lot of time discussing little things. True, if a person always only lies, fencing himself off with lies from any sincere communication, this indicates the presence of big problems in his psyche - he is either afraid to speak openly with people, or despises them.

It happens that people lie so as not to offend the interlocutor. A colleague shows you pictures of his cat, and you say "how cute", although you do not think so at all and generally hate cats. Or mom gave you new kitchen curtains that you absolutely didn’t like. But you still say: "Thank you, very great." Why hurt mom? A friend has an unsuccessful haircut, and you cheer her up - and you know, it's even spicy, it suits you. You lie to maintain social connections and to make people feel better.
Step 3
Often a lie is an attempt to hide the real state of affairs or the desire to present oneself in the best possible way. As a rule, this does not end with anything good, because you know from childhood that everything secret becomes clear. In the end, your lies are revealed and you find yourself in an even worse position. But at the moment when I have to say honestly, it is sometimes so difficult to resist and not embellish reality. You are deceived out of cowardice to admit your failure, out of fear to face the truth and be yourself.

Lying for selfish motives is one of the most dangerous types of lies. Lying in order to get some benefit for yourself, using the trust of other people, manipulating their behavior is disgusting. Such calculating lies can destroy not only relationships, but also reputation. No matter how cunning such a selfish liar may seem to himself, he ends up losing. People will lose respect for him.

There is another type of liar - the pathological liar. Sometimes people are simply unable to say a word of the truth, they lie for completely innocent reasons, sometimes even to their own detriment. Psychologists say this behavior can be the result of childhood trauma and loneliness.
