Inexperienced attempts to teach a child to swim often lead to the fact that a person begins to be afraid of water. And throughout life, this fear intensifies, developing into a phobia.
Instructions
Step 1
If you want to get rid of your fear of water, act gradually. First, understand what you are afraid of - drowning or the fact that the water is cold. Both fears can be cured. All you need is patience and a desire to become a freer person, getting rid of far-fetched problems.
Step 2
If you're afraid of drowning, sign up for a pool and find a coach who can teach you how to swim. An experienced teacher will explain to you how to stay on the water, what movements to make so as not to go to the bottom. Six to eight sessions will be enough for you to become an excellent swimmer. After that, you can try swimming in open water, but it is better that first someone insures you, is constantly nearby in case of panic. And always remember that a person who knows how to swim will never drown in calm water. He can sip on water only if he loses his composure and begins to make rash movements. But you already know how to swim, you have nothing to fear.
Step 3
If you don't like the sensation of entering the water, try home therapy. Pour water at a comfortable temperature into a basin, turn on your favorite music and lower your feet into the container one by one. The pleasant associations evoked by your favorite song will also transfer to physical actions. To completely cover them, while standing in the basin, eat a bite of something tasty. Repeat this exercise several times until you associate entering the water with something pleasant.
Step 4
Remember that fears make life very difficult. They restrict freedom, interfere with doing what you love. A person can and should get rid of fears before they develop into phobias. These are deeper mental lesions, which can be difficult to cope with alone. Phobias are treated by psychotherapists, often with medication. Do not allow this and stop fears at the stage of inception.
