Work addiction is still addiction, even if it is socially acceptable and sometimes acceptable. And it's not at all a fact that workaholism means good earnings. Often, a workaholic is more important than the process of work itself than its result, including material.

For the first time the word "workaholism" was introduced in 1971 by Wayne Oates, a priest and psychologist from the United States. In the same year, he will publish the book Confessions of a Workaholic. However, even 52 years earlier, the Hungarian psychoanalyst Sandor Ferenczi, an associate and associate of the great Freud, described a disease called "Sunday neurosis." When the work week ended, some of Ferenczi's patients complained of general apathy, lack of plans for life, lack of initiative, anger, guilt, and so on; this is later described as a calssical withdrawal symptom, when the addict is deprived of the addict's object of addiction (for example, the addict athlete skips a workout). In a strange way, patients recovered as soon as they went to work on Monday.

Now there is no common understanding of workaholism, there is no exact definition and methods of study, there are a great many classifications. By the way, the term itself needs to be clarified, because they talk about workaholism, about work addiction, about work addiction …

As a rule, workaholism and hard work are shared, and if the latter should be encouraged and educated, then the first is a disease that should be prevented, treated and preventive measures should be taken.

Most authors agree that the basic difference between a hardworking person and a workaholic is addiction and pleasure. An industrious person does not experience a pathological craving for work, he is focused on the result, he understands that without rest, his working capacity falls and, accordingly, plans high-quality rest, which becomes part of his work. Plus, they don't neglect family. A workaholic is a different matter: he supports health care only in words, he does not know how to rest and does not like, or they work mainly for the sake of the process, and the family is perceived as an annoying obstacle, an obstacle on the way to another project, another task.

Professor Kekelidze, deputy director of the State Scientific Center for Social and Forensic Psychiatry, says that a person should not be a workaholic, but a “victorious”, because “the second makes a career not around the clock work, but with his head, energy, organization, clear formulation of goals.”

The world leader in workaholism is South Korea (perhaps, in fact, North, but no data). This country has the largest number of overtime, irregular working days and, as a result, sick ineffective workers. The Korean Ministry of Health, for example, has issued an order according to which electricity is cut off in all buildings of the Ministry at exactly 6 pm. This is done so that everyone goes home, and does not sit up until midnight. This measure was taken after the incidence of divorces among employees increased, and the birth rate also decreased (this is against the background of frequent suicides on the basis of overwork). Sexual activity of a workaholic, by the way, is very low; and vice versa - families where they have sex approximately, on average, twice a week, husbands are an order of magnitude less likely to take work home, because there is a more pleasant job (although it takes less time).

Psychologists, psychotherapists and psychiatrists recommend these rules for the prevention of workaholism:

1. Think about it, do you work to live, or live to work?

2. Do not stay to work overtime unless there is a truly urgent work requirement.

3. Don't grab onto every new opportunity. Follow up on previous cases.

4. Delegate if you are a leader. Share work, don't take on all responsibilities.

five. Take breaks from work. If your schedule allows, try this: 55 minutes of work, 5 minutes of rest, and not scrolling, but quiet doing nothing.

6. From the moment you leave work until the moment you return, at least 12 hours must elapse. How to do it? Plan your time and work more precisely.

7. Make a work plan for each day of the week. The time frame is tight. Do not have time - suffer, but outside of work, on the way home.

8. Ban on phrases like "I work only for you." This is not true, the workaholic works for himself.

Sometimes it is advised to find a hobby, but there is a pitfall - a workaholic's hobby often turns into the next passion after work.

Often, workaholism is triggered by family problems, when a person flees from the family to where he is appreciated or, at least, is not pushed around him. More about this in the next article.

In the most severe cases, when the workaholism of a husband or wife threatens family well-being, it is necessary to contact a specialist, self-help does not work here.
