The egoist serves only himself, sees only himself. And he thinks that this is the way to live. Meanwhile, in modern society it is not easy for such a person to get along. How to understand whether you are an egoist or not? How to overcome this negative character trait?
Selfish people bring a lot of grief to others because they live only for themselves. The paradox is that at the same time they feel the most offended, the most deprived and unworthy. Although they pay a lot of attention to their persona and are primarily interested only in themselves. The most important concern of an egoist:
- I look like;
- what I have;
- how others treat me (both close ones and everyone else).
At the same time, a selfish person does not think about other people at all and is not interested in their life.
One of the characteristic signs of an egoist is hypocrisy. He can be very different in different situations and behaves differently with different people, because he puts them in the grades of significance for himself. And the one who is not beneficial to him can betray "for a pinch of tobacco." So secret things should not be trusted.
An egoist is indifferent to the troubles of other people, he shows indifference to what does not directly concern him. He loves to do a lot in secret and hates sincerity and openness, considers honest people narrow-minded. This is a person with a "double bottom".
Surely in this description, many have found the features of their acquaintances. It will be more difficult to find an egoist in oneself, but it is also possible. Just analyze your relationships with others and remember how often you are called an egoist (selfish). Think - when it comes to someone's interests, how often the question arises in your head: "What about me? And me?" See how often you use the word "I" at home and at work? If there and there more than 10 times, then this is already a symptom.
You can also take the description of an egoist from the beginning of this article, write out his characteristic features in one column, and the opposite ones in another. And evaluate yourself on these qualities from 1 to 10 points. And then ask three or four of your friends to put down these ratings, just tell them that it is very important for you and that they should be impartial and objective. Now print the arithmetic mean for each quality - this will be a more or less real picture.
If it turns out that you have many traits characteristic of an egoist, and you want to get rid of them, then you need to cultivate opposite traits in yourself, that is, develop altruism. The easiest way is to look around and determine who in your environment needs help here and now, and provide it. Be proactive at work. Think about what you can do for your entryway, home, city and country. Anyone who thinks not only about himself gets rid of selfishness very quickly.
Begin to be interested in life in its entirety, do not dwell only on your problems. Find a use for your strengths and abilities. There are many problems now everywhere, all of them require solution. Perhaps your help is lacking for this?
To get inspiration for self-development and get rid of selfishness, read books from the series "The Lives of Remarkable People" and the Lives of the Saints. Or watch films about great travelers, scientists, artists, military leaders. Their life is an example of self-denial and absolute absence of selfishness. This will help you look at life with different eyes.
