In life, we often face situations where we need to do something, but … it's scary. So how do you get bolder and stop procrastinating things for later?
This is the whole essence of human nature - to postpone an unpleasant choice for us as far as possible. Unfortunately, the tactic of waiting only adds to our fear. Everything has a price. Each time we postpone an important conversation, we make it more and more frightening for our imagination due to the fact that we have more time to worry. This is how some phobias are formed. Ultimately, all these postponed tasks snowball down on important areas of our life, for example, on relationships or careers. Moreover, over time, such a habit of drifting away leads to a decrease in stress resistance, which is precisely what is formed from overcoming such small life challenges.
All we need is to develop a kind of impulse that will force us to immediately rush into the pool headlong and instantly resolve an unpleasant issue. So the main task is to maximize the chances of action and minimize the chances of fear.
1. Long thoughts are the first step to being chicken-hearted
The worst thing in this situation is to get rejected. But the point is, courage and determination also have their own shelf life. So if you decide to have a serious conversation, for example, just talk. No need to wait for the right moment, do it now.
2. Focus on overcoming yourself
First, decide on the content of the conversation and the result you want to come to in the end. Then decide what is the first phrase you will say. Many people simply cannot decide to start a conversation for weeks. The hardest part is getting started. It will be easier further.
3. Do a similar action in a less intimidating environment
For example, if you have little experience in public speaking and have a big speech in front of an audience, practice in a less formal setting. Talk to a random passer-by, asking him for directions. Do the same several times. Try reading a passage from your favorite work in front of your family. Noticing their interest, you will very soon want to add expressiveness and emotionality. You need to instill that people listen to you, interact with you. After that, you will enter the stage as a person who knows how to own the attention of the audience.
4. Think about the consequences
On the positive, of course. Reflect on how much freedom you will finally feel when you deal with an unpleasant business. It's like exams: I passed it once, and then the whole summer is ahead.
5. Think about prospects
This is especially true when saying goodbye to something old. For example, you may find it difficult to end a relationship that simply continues out of inertia. Yes, change takes up a lot of internal resources, but it still brings the long-awaited freedom and relief.
6. Set a deadline
An important conversation should be like a trip to the doctor: precisely prescribed and absolutely inevitable. The specific date for your conversation will make you finally decide on it.
7. Take action with someone
You need support to decide on something that you have been afraid of for a long time. So do not hesitate to ask your friends and loved ones to come to your lecture, where you will give a presentation. There are many people who do not dare to start something just because of the lack of support. They cannot decide to go to the gym or see a psychologist. Don't be among them.
Of course, there are naturally brave people, and there are timid people, but this does not mean that your courage or timidity is unchanged. Work on yourself, communicate more, and over time you will become who you want to be.
