The word "repentance" is akin to the word "repentance" used in the church. The difference is that repentance is a process of internal reappraisal that takes place inside a person, while repentance is a story about one's wrong actions.
Repentance is the realization of your actions as wrong and unacceptable. Each person has a certain boundary in his soul, which he tries not to cross, so as not to be “outside the law” in his own eyes. For one, hitting a person is quite normal, for another even raising his voice to another is a reason for remorse afterwards.
Internal morality is a very individual concept.
The limits of admissibility, however, can also change. When a person becomes convinced that his very internal norms are wrong, this can force a change in the entire value system. In such conditions, a person is usually put in turns of fate, for example, when he finds himself in the same situation as the person who was offended by him. And this makes him think seriously about his internal boundaries.
The most sensitive people are those who have suffered a lot themselves, if they find the strength not to focus only on themselves. Such people have a very strong inner moral feeling and they add their own to the norms of public morality, which they have deeply suffered. For example, if someone in the family has not fulfilled his duties, such a person will never ask: "Why did you not fulfill?" After all, this question, in fact, is not a request for information, but latent pressure on a person. People with a heightened moral sense will never ask him. Rather, they will simply restrainedly remind you of the need to perform this or that action.
Sometimes the reason for the shift in moral boundaries is situations of civic responsibility for actions. More often, alas, criminal. And then a person suddenly realizes how far he has left, has moved away from people because of this or that deed. A person puts himself outside the rules of other people, thereby alienating them from himself. This may be accompanied by a feeling of a certain chosenness, as in Crime and Punishment, but over time this situation becomes extremely unpleasant and a person seeks to reconcile, to reunite with others through repentance, even at the cost of punishment. This is exactly what happened to the hero of Dostoevsky.
In such an instance as a court, sincere repentance is also highly valued and is taken into account when passing a sentence precisely because it means a change in a person. That is, it seems unacceptable for a person to live as before.
It is better to learn from the mistakes of others and as often as possible to measure your inner moral sense with social norms so that society is comfortable for you.
