Scientific research in the field of human psychology and behavior has proven that your behavior in society depends on what clothes you wear. Also, clothes affect health, emotions, relationships with work colleagues, relatives and friends. To reliably verify that clothing affects behavior, experts conducted a series of experiments.
If you start to think about why you are wearing this or that thing, then as a result you will see that it can perform various functions. Clothing protects, decorates, creates a certain style and image, emphasizes the dignity or hides figure flaws, is a belonging to a certain way of life, culture or religion.
In one of the experiments, it was found that a person whose clothes emphasize his high position creates an image of a successful, business person, confident in himself and in his actions. The created image also affects the behavior of the people around. When such a person broke the rules and, for example, confidently crossed the street at a red light, then the people nearby also began to move without thinking about the consequences.
An interesting study was carried out with people who were dressed in the uniform of the military, rescuers, medical workers, police officers. A man dressed in a uniform asked passers-by to help him: carry luggage, change a bill, give a call on his mobile or show the route to the desired place. People were very willing to respond to requests, while in the cases of people dressed in other clothes that did not attract attention, this did not happen. When a woman dressed in a medical uniform and another woman dressed in a regular business suit were asked to collect donations for a medical fund, people were more willing to give money to the one in the uniform, believing that in this case, the likelihood of cheating is much less, and her competence in the field of medicine is higher than that of an ordinary person.
There is an opinion among people involved in advocacy that a person who comes to court should be dressed in a discreet, but stylish enough suit to have a positive impact on the judge and everyone in the courtroom. Also, some lawyers say that a wedding ring worn on the finger of even unmarried people has a positive effect on the decision made by the judge.
The following study was conducted among people who were given to put on a regular white coat and think about what profession they are now portraying. Those who decided that the white coat belonged to the doctor began to behave more attentively towards the people around them. In their subconscious, there was an image of a medical worker and a belief that doctors should be more sensitive to people.
Another part of the people imagined that the white coat corresponds to the profession of an artist and were 100% sure of this. As a result, they began to behave more freely and uninhibited, to offer new ideas, to fantasize and be creative. In their opinion, artists have exactly these qualities, and the white coat emphasizes their belonging to this category of people.
The idea of experimenting with clothes came about thanks to a famous cartoon, where children, dressed in a plain dull school uniform, get caught in the rain, which decorates their clothes in different colors. The behavior of children has changed beyond recognition: if in uniform they behaved with restraint and calmness, then after their clothes changed color, the behavior became completely opposite.
The researchers made another conclusion: if a person is dressed in clothes of a certain color and style, then his demeanor will change depending on this. For example, a black T-shirt and jeans cause more aggressiveness, while a formal suit with a shirt and tie will make you more restrained and help you show your business qualities.
When choosing clothes for work, going to the theater, cinema, going to a restaurant or meeting with friends, think carefully about what quality you would like to emphasize in yourself and how the chosen clothes can help you in this.
