The word phobia comes from the Greek phobos - fear. That is, it is a fear of something. For example, aerophobia - fear of heights, claustrophobia - fear of enclosed spaces, etc. The ability to feel fear is inherent in any person, even the bravest. This is probably an echo of those ancient times when primitive people were completely helpless in front of the forces of the elements and large predators. But it is one thing when it comes to a real threat, risk, and quite another - if the fear is meaningless, inexplicable, irrational.

Try to call on cold logic and common sense for help. For example, there are people who are afraid to walk on a high bridge over a river or mountain gorge. They are overwhelmed by the fear that the bridge below them will fail and they will perish. How to act in such a situation? We must inspire ourselves: “The bridge was built taking into account the increased loads, it is strong and reliable. Before my eyes, cars are driving along it, each of them is many times heavier than me. And the bridge withstands them perfectly”. Repeat these words over and over in your mind.

Or it’s a fear of airplanes. Some people are terrified of this type of transport. At the very thought that they will have to fly somewhere, they are seized with horror. They immediately remember the reports of disasters and victims. Here, too, logic, backed up by dispassionate statistics, can help. Even the alarmist will be influenced by such arguments: yes, unfortunately, there are plane crashes, but compared to the total number of flights, this happens extremely rarely. Immeasurably more people die in road accidents, but you are not afraid to use a car or a bus. And the plane scares you for some reason.

Sometimes it is worth acting according to the method: "wedge by wedge" or: "treat like with like." In other words, you need to specifically put yourself in a situation where you have to experience fear. And with an effort of will to overcome it, literally through "I can not." For example, you are afraid of communicating with strangers (social phobia). So, you need to force yourself to go shopping, attend meetings, concerts, sports events.

Afraid of dogs? Under any pretext, go to those friends who have a dog. Overpower yourself once by clenching your teeth - it will be much easier further. The method is very effective, although it must be resorted to with caution, because it can not only help in solving the problem, but also aggravate it.
