The group has its own norms, values and rules. And this set of group laws exerts its influence on the decision-making, on the behavior of each of its members. People who have recently joined the group feel this especially strongly.
Group norms as a method of influence
Pressure occurs in any group, work team or company of friends. When a person realizes that he belongs to one or another of them, he automatically accepts and shares the group set of rules and laws. This code was developed and approved by the majority of the members of the group, and it regulates the relationship between them. If one of the members of the group suddenly does not comply with the rules, there are sanctions in this case. Sanctions can be expressed both in actions and in a change in the attitude towards the “guilty”. The first refers rather to formal collectives, the second to informal ones.
For those who comply with group norms, rewards are entitled, which can also be expressed in various forms. They can be material or psychological. In a work team, they can be promoted, in the company of friends, they can demonstrate a warm attitude and approval. The first time is most difficult for a newcomer in a particular group, because he has to adjust to an unfamiliar system of relationships. When he realizes the basic rules and values, he makes a choice - accept or reject. Sometimes the adoption of norms is carried out by force, under pressure from the group. Such a person takes on the role of the "scapegoat" in the group.
The phenomenon of conformism
Acceptance of group norms and values under the threat of losing the group or their position is called conformism. A person chooses the opinion of the group to the detriment of his own. This does not always happen consciously, it is often possible to really convince yourself of the correctness of such a decision. In this case, it makes sense to talk about a conformal personality, and not about simple opportunism. Conformity occurs in most groups. There is authority, the more his opinions are valued, the higher the level of conformity of others. If there is one dissenting person in the group, he will be constantly pressured.
On the other hand, conformity in the group helps to maintain its unity and homogeneity, promotes unanimity. Group membership is essential to a person. The real groups that he belongs to can impose their own rules on him. For a number of reasons, a person remains in this group, although inside he is indifferent to its norms. But he will also have a reference group, which he will choose himself. This group is not necessarily real, it can be perfect. A person is guided by her, guided by her values and norms in his behavior.
