Lazy people are condemned by many. When one person is working and the other just lies on the couch and is lazy, it is annoying. However, laziness is not always a sign of unwillingness to do something. Behind it, there may be a disease in which only a specialist can provide assistance.

Laziness as a sign of mental illness
Laziness as a sign of mental illness

When a person is busy with a business that brings him pleasure, he has a motivation, a goal, a plan for the implementation of the plan and the action itself. A person does his job, then looks at the result, and if he is satisfied with it, then the brain releases dopamine as a reward for the work done.

When laziness starts to overwhelm you, it means that something in your plans is not the way you would like, and the results obtained do not satisfy the brain. He begins to believe that you are doing useless work and eventually "puts" you on the couch. And you say that you are too lazy to do something, although in fact you have apathy. And this is already a disease.

An apathetic person loses vivid feelings, his emotions fade away. Everything that happens around him ceases to interest him. Such a person does not worry, does not worry, does not show any initiative, is indifferent to himself and the environment, feels worthless and unnecessary. The growing sense of guilt due to idleness further exacerbates the mood and distorts the emotional background, depletes. Any persuasion, attempts to make an effort on yourself and start doing something do not lead to anything. The will is completely suppressed, and the person is ready to lie on the couch, not getting up, for long days, and sometimes months.

Often, apathy accompanies the onset of depression, and only a specialist can say for sure whether this is laziness or the onset of the disease. Apathy is not as harmless as it seems to some.

The consequence of this condition can be the onset of the development of Alzheimer's disease, neurological diseases, and sometimes serious brain diseases and even the development of a tumor.

In addition, in psychiatry, there are other morbid states of the psyche, which at first glance may look like "laziness". These include, for example:

  1. Abulia - a condition in which a person is not able to perform any actions associated with an effort of will: to wash, eat, take a shower, go for a walk, go to work - all this is almost impossible for him; such a borderline condition as apato-abulic syndrome is considered separately.
  2. Anhedonia is a disorder for which a state of complete lack of joy is typical; it is almost impossible to correct this condition on your own; this requires the appropriate help of a specialist.
  3. Schizophrenia is also characterized by a gradually progressive suppression of will, lethargy, fading of emotions; loss of all interest, progressive laziness may hint at the possible development of this pathology.
  4. Bipolar affective disorder (manic-depressive psychosis) in a monopolar form, when there are only depressive episodes and moments of remission, euphoria and mania are not recorded.
  5. Clinical depression itself and its various types, however, laziness is not the dominant symptom of depression; this symptom is never diagnosed solely on the basis of this symptom.
