This direction of psychotherapy can be called sensual and practical. The founder of Gestalt therapy was opposed to theorizing and argued that his methods and ideas are applied, advocating their practical application. In addition, Frederick Perls was an adamant opponent of self-knowledge through the means of reason. In Gestalt therapy, intelligence is not a means of self-knowledge, unlike feelings and emotions. The main goal of the gestalt therapist patient is to learn to consciously live the current situation through his own emotions and sensations, to trust his own feelings, to learn to live in the present.

The therapist's task is to help the client integrate all parts of his lifestyle and his life into a single whole, as well as work out the so-called unfinished gestalts. These unfinished gestalts (unresolved situations from the past) were considered by the founders of the method to be the main cause of neuroses and anxiety states. Incomplete situations from the past do not allow a person to concentrate on the present, interfere with awareness and lead to suffering. With the help of a gestalt therapist, a person learns to let go and work through his past, as a result of which he frees up enough psychic energy to work with the present moment.

Step 4

In the process of psychotherapy, the client and the therapist work in tandem, as a result of which, in the process of work, serious internal conflicts are discovered, the client learns to be aware of not only his emotions, but also bodily experiences, forms a sense of inner integrity, learns to independently take responsibility for his own life and his own invaluable experience … The client leaves the Gestalt therapist's office, gaining not only new knowledge, but also new sensations and emotions that help him cope with internal conflict.
