As a rule, people who have the bad habit of biting their fingernails do not even notice that they are doing it, but some manage to bite their nails and toenails. This is how people try to reduce their feelings of stress from difficulties and problems.
This is accompanied by an unconscious action, that is, during stress, a person involuntarily begins to bite his nails or peel off the nail plate. People may not even notice how their fingers get into their mouth, often they are told about this by others. Of course, such a habit is a violation of the nervous system, the presence of a complex, mental problems.
From a medical point of view, a bad habit is a serious disease (onychophagia) and entails negative consequences. The most common occurrence is getting an infection inside the body, which is contained on the fingers and under the nail plate. With strong biting, inflammation of the periungual space occurs, the shape of the nail is deformed.
There is a point of view that a bad habit appears when there is a lack of certain substances in the body. This applies to those people who, in the process of biting off, swallow pieces of the nail plate. It has been proven that nails contain a fairly strong protein (keratin), due to which the body replenishes the missing amount of substances.
As a rule, children suffer from this disease, but it is not uncommon among adults. Parents should not punish the child for the constant biting of nails, since the already high nervous tension only increases, which will lead to a deterioration in the result. It is advisable to calmly explain to the child that it looks ugly from the outside, and can also cause abdominal pain.
Many people need the help of a specialist psychologist, since they cannot get rid of a bad habit on their own. The simplest ways to voluntarily give up biting is to use a special varnish with a bitter taste and constant adherence to an elegant manicure (so that it would be a pity to spoil it).
