Communication is one of the most important spheres of human life. However, people do not always manage to find a common language. This is due to the communication barriers - psychological and other difficulties in communication.

A communication barrier is any reason that prevents people from building effective communication or completely blocks it. In the case of the presence of communication barriers, information is distorted, loses its original meaning or does not reach the recipient at all.

External communication barriers

External communication barriers are understood as circumstances beyond the control of the interlocutors, for example, unfavorable conditions or a meeting place: disconnections and malfunctions of telephone communications, weather anomalies, loud noises, etc. The barrier of misunderstanding, when people speak different languages in the literal sense, have speech and diction defects, can also be attributed to external barriers. This also includes the forced operation of special terms, in which the interlocutor does not understand, socio-cultural differences and traditions of behavior in society.

Internal communication barriers

Internal barriers are psychological. This can be a bias towards the interlocutor for any reason (because of his nationality, gender, age, social status, etc.), his appearance, character traits and behavior, his occupation. In this case, stereotypes interfere with objectively perceiving a person's speech and make him evaluate him negatively, which affects communication.

Another similar problem is selective listening, when a person notices in someone else's speech only that information that is close to him or with which he agrees. And what is contrary to his ideas or interests is simply ignored. Such people only hear what they want to hear.

If a person is constantly distracted, this will also prevent him from establishing trusting and effective communication. the interlocutor may be offended when he sees an inattentive attitude towards himself.

The negative psychological mood of the interlocutor can act as a communication barrier: an aggressive, agitated state, tension, aversion to conversation, feeling unwell, resentment or anger at the interlocutor, etc. Distrust, feelings of hostility, emotional closeness and tightness, complexes and fears, a significant difference in the worldview of the interlocutors interfere with communicating.

So, one person with a phrase will have one association, depending on his life experience, and the second - another, and they may have completely different ideas about the problem. This is the so-called logical barrier that often arises between people with different types of thinking: visual-figurative, abstract-logical or visual-effective. There are also differences in the speed of thinking, criticality, flexibility, depth, the way information is presented (short and laconic or florid). In this case, an attempt to understand the interlocutor and put yourself in his place, attentiveness can solve the problem.
