Abilities largely predetermine a person's success in a particular field of activity. Choose for yourself the sphere of self-realization in accordance with your abilities, and then the likelihood of your success increases.

Abilities are individual psychological properties of a person that are necessary for the successful performance of various types of activities. In psychology, general abilities and special abilities are traditionally distinguished.

General abilities

General abilities are understood as the intellectual abilities of a person. Intelligence is those abilities that are responsible for the success of a person in mental activity. The following cognitive abilities depend on the general level of intelligence:

  • memory,
  • Attention,
  • the ability to think (the ability to compare, analyze, distinguish the main from the secondary),
  • imagination,
  • representation (for example, the ability to represent a three-dimensional figure according to a drawn flat diagram),
  • proficiency in speech.

All people have intellectual abilities, but the degree of their development varies from low to high. Most people have more pronounced intellectual abilities (for example, some people can express themselves well, they have a good memory), others have others (for example, abstract-logical thinking, thanks to which a person quickly and correctly solves mathematical problems).

Special Abilities

If intellectual abilities are responsible for the success of a person in general in life and, especially, in the field of mental work, then special abilities are responsible for the success of a person in specific activities.

For example, special abilities include:

  • athletic ability,
  • musical (a sense of rhythm, perfect pitch),
  • artistic (the ability to visualize and express images in art),
  • mathematical,
  • technical
  • and others.

Each person has the ability for several types of activities. But the most pronounced, as a rule, are abilities in one or two areas.

The nature of abilities

Abilities are based on inclinations. The inclinations are innate features of the human nervous system, his body, thanks to which he learns better in certain areas of activity.

For example, the key to good memory is the efficient transmission of nerve impulses between nerve cells in the areas of the brain responsible for memory. The foundation for sports abilities is the features of the constitution, the physique of a person, the speed of transmission of nerve impulses from the brain to the muscles (the higher it is, the more pronounced sports abilities are).

Human abilities are not limited to knowledge, skills and abilities. Abilities are primary in relation to ZUNs: if a person has mathematical abilities, then he will learn mathematical knowledge faster and better than others, develop mathematical skills and abilities. Conversely, without having the appropriate abilities, it is difficult to achieve outstanding success in activities.

It is necessary in life to choose such an area for self-development, for which you have the inclinations and abilities. In this case, you are more likely to achieve impressive success and establish yourself as a professional in your field of activity.
