Instructions

Step 1

Realize your flaw. If colleagues or friends constantly make comments about the essence of the matter or ask what you wanted to say, this is a wake-up call. If it takes a long time to answer someone's questions, you need to fight talkativeness. You can understand this shortcoming by conducting a small experiment. Record the speech on a voice recorder, and then analyze it carefully. Rewrite everything on paper, cross out interjections, introductory words, parasitic words. Remove phrases that do not affect the meaning of the text, and words that could not have been pronounced at all. Compare the resulting speech with the original and understand what needs to be achieved.

Step 2

Think over phrases, texts, monologues in advance, be it a conversation with a friend, a business meeting or a report. You do not need to memorize everything word for word, just write a structure on paper or in your head and do not deviate from it. When composing your speech, start with the essentials. When a person speaks from afar, listeners are distracted and may miss an important point. Even in dialogue, try to think over a laconic answer in your head first.

Step 3

Learn to express thoughts concisely. Do this exercise: read a short text and try to convey its meaning in one sentence. Try to keep it to a minimum, leaving only the necessary words. Practice this regularly and you will soon be formulating thoughts more concisely.

Step 4

Try to resolve most of your business issues via email. As a rule, the written thought turns out to be capacious. Start saving your phone money. Top up your account with less than usual, and gradually learn to call and talk about business. Ask friends or coworkers to set a time frame for stories and descriptions of some events.

Step 5

Learn to listen. Talkative people usually hear only themselves and therefore often interrupt. Do not allow interruption of the interlocutor, listen attentively to his words. Be short, but ask more questions. They show you are interested in the topic of conversation and give the other person an opportunity to speak.

Step 6

As soon as you notice that you are not being listened to, stop talking. Do not get involved in someone else's conversation, even if you really want to. This is a sign of impoliteness. Some people see talkativeness as a quality that only stupid people have.
