If a person considers himself unattractive in appearance and boring, he will hold on to it and wait for negative reactions to himself in society.

The self-concept contributes to the achievement of inner harmony, because any discrepancy with the inner world generates discomfort. If the new experience does not contradict the existing one, it is included in the self-concept. If a conflict arises, new knowledge is not accepted.

Through the prism of the self-concept, the individual perceives all life events. She also gives rise to his expectations about himself. These expectations contribute to the implementation of certain behaviors. The negative self-concept becomes the basis for an inferiority complex, while the positive one is associated with self-acceptance and self-respect.

The self-concept is not fully realized, there is also an unconscious part. This part can be realized by a person through behavior. The self-concept usually endows all human actions with a common characteristic, and this direction can be noticed.

A person constantly compares his behavior with the existing self-concept, which contributes to the regulation of behavior. If the behavior for some reason cannot be regulated and is at odds with the self-concept, it causes suffering. A person experiences guilt, shame, anger, resentment.

Of course, not every mismatch causes such severe discomfort. Only non-confirmation of the moments of the self-concept that are important for a person. It is important to strike a balance: a weak self-concept will make a person spineless, a rigid self-concept can lead to psychosomatic diseases.

For people with low self-esteem, the mismatch between behavior and self-concept occurs constantly, it is very difficult for them to achieve harmony. In this case, the help of a specialist is required. It is imperative to work on low self-esteem, otherwise mental health will suffer sooner or later.
