It happens that people find themselves in situations that are unsettling. For example, the person they were hoping for suddenly fails, or some purchases turn out to be somewhat more expensive than planned. They can easily ruin the mood, but still, many quickly forget them. If at the same time a person experiences disappointment, anxiety, despair and other negative emotions for a long time, we can talk about frustration.
Frustration in psychology is a mental state that arises due to a real or imaginary impossibility to satisfy one's needs or the inconsistency of existing capabilities with one's desires. Frustration can be called a traumatic emotional state. This state is expressed directly in experiences and corresponding behavior when certain insurmountable difficulties arise in the course of achieving a certain goal.
The causes of frustration can be: setbacks, stress, situations that reduce self-esteem. In this case, a frustrator is a certain obstacle, because of which it is impossible to fulfill the plan. Moreover, obstacles can be external and internal. A person may not have enough money (external obstacle) or experience, knowledge (internal). Conflicts can also be the reason: with the environment (external obstacle) or intrapersonal. Losses can act as a frustrator: financial losses (external) or loss of performance, self-confidence (internal). Other barriers can be considered restrictions, norms and rules, laws (external) or conscience, honesty and integrity (internal).
It depends only on the personality itself how it will get out of this situation. This can be done in constructive ways or in destructive ways. Constructive forms of frustration can be called rationalization and intensification of efforts. The main destructive forms include: substitution, displacement, aggression, fixation, regression, depression.
Rationalization presupposes an analysis of the situation, the search for positive moments even in an unpleasant case, the justification of some conclusions for the future.
The intensification of efforts is manifested in an even greater striving to achieve the goal, the mobilization of all internal and external efforts for this.
Substitution can sometimes also be viewed in a positive way, but nevertheless this is not a solution to the actual frustrating situation. Substitution is a situation where one unmet need is replaced by another.
Displacement is similar to replacement, but it consists in changing the object of the frustrating situation directly. So, people suddenly begin to take off on loved ones anger caused by a working relationship.
Aggression is destructive and destructive behavior of an individual that can harm both others and the person himself. Usually, certain setbacks lead to this behavior, which occur at the very last moment before achieving the desired.
Fixation is also called stereotyped behavior. These are situations when a person becomes obsessed with performing some useless or dangerous actions, even when it is known that they will definitely not be able to bring results.
Regression is viewed as the opposite of progress. This is a return to some primitive forms of behavior, a situation when a person, as they say, falls into childhood.
Depression is a depressed, depressed personality state that can lead to the most sad consequences. With such manifestations, it is worth seeking help from specialists.
