A lie is a statement deliberately made by a liar that contradicts the truth. The main, emotional reasons for deception are fear, shame, passion, guilt. While even professional psychologists may not always be able to tell if a person is lying, there are common traits by which you can recognize deception.
Instructions
Step 1
For a long time, the most reliable and obvious signs of lying were considered lack of eye contact and nervous movements, for example, fidgeting in a chair. But it is customary among Europeans to talk, looking into the eyes of a person, and representatives of Eastern civilizations will perceive such behavior as aggression and disrespect. And nervousness can be caused by other reasons: for example, your interlocutor is forced to explain to you the reason for the recent conflict, although he is late for an important meeting.
Step 2
Ask a distracting question that isn't directly related to the other person's speech. Usually, a long time to answer means switching from the mode of lying to the truth. However, take into account the temperament of the interlocutor - phlegmatic people, for example, generally speak slowly, make long pauses between phrases and choose words for a long time.
Step 3
Ask the question on which you think the person is lying, in such a way that the answer is unequivocal - yes or no. If the other person begins to evade, repeat the question until you get that answer.
Step 4
Lack of gestures. Lying requires a lot of mental effort, as a result, there is no energy left to illustrate words with movements. However, if a person by nature hardly gesticulates, this factor is unlikely to help you.
Step 5
Compare the person's behavior with everyday behavior. The liar will necessarily betray himself with excessive or insufficient emotionality, overt or hidden.
Step 6
Threat punishment for lying. There is no need to appeal to conscience and religious fear. The punishment should be absolutely close and inevitable: dismissal, demotion in salary or position, breakdown of relations, etc. If the stake is too high for the liar, he will give up.
