Step 1
Start the meeting with a friendly handshake. This will show the client that you are ready to start an effective interaction.

Introduce yourself first, then find out the client's first and last name. At the very beginning of counseling, you should not learn too much unnecessary information.

Create a safe environment for the client. Most often, a person comes to a counselor with a sense of fear and excitement.

Take on the role of the proactive side. Try to be the first to ask questions of concern to the client. Avoid questions with unambiguous answers, this can lead the client to a dead end.

Familiarize the client with the structure of the consultation procedure. At the very beginning, decide on a time frame.
