Forbearance is a person's ability to overcome life's difficulties while maintaining peace of mind and tranquility. If ordinary patience has limits, then patience is infinite.

Step 1

In the etymological sense, the word "longsuffering" comes from two words: "long" and "endure." It means the ability to endure the adversity of fate for a long time.

Step 2

The term "longsuffering" is uncharacteristic for everyday Russian speech and classical literature, it is not used in psychology either. He came from the Orthodox tradition, in which longsuffering is understood as the ability to peacefully and without indignation endure the aggression of other people, one's own plight, illness, etc.

Step 3

Modern society tries not to remember this term, replacing it with a more utilitarian one - “tolerance”. But the whole difference between tolerance and longsuffering is revealed if you look at the inner state of a person. Tolerant people tend to endure other people's complexes and shortcomings, while in their thoughts they can despise and even hate their neighbor. People are always inclined to be derogatory towards those who are at least in some way unlike themselves. And a person who has longsuffering treats everyone around him favorably: not only outwardly, but also in his thoughts.

Step 4

In Orthodox teaching, longsuffering is recognized as a virtue. It is not given to a person from birth and is not developed through exercise. The source of Orthodox patience, like all other virtues, is God himself.

Step 5

Forbearance is a God-given opportunity to go through hardships, trials and difficulties, while maintaining peace and tranquility in the soul.

Step 6

Many chapters of the Old and New Testaments are devoted to longsuffering. So, in the Gospel of Luke, Christ calls patience salvific for the human soul, and the Apostle Paul in the Epistle to the Galatians speaks of longsuffering as a result of the Holy Spirit acting on the human soul.

Step 7

If the virtue of forbearance is capable of elevating a person to Heaven, then its absence, and even worse - impatience, can play a fatal role in his fate. According to the books of the Old Testament, due to impatience, the prophet Samuel was cut off from the kingdom, and Moses could not enter Canaan.

Step 8

A long-suffering person is in no hurry to be angry with his neighbor, he easily and calmly endures grievances and reproaches, everyday troubles and does not relate to his life momentarily.

Step 9

A patient person has a similar attitude to life and to himself. With only one difference - his patience has limits. There is even an expression “cup of patience” to describe this. If the patient's cup of patience sometimes overflows, then in the case of people with the gift of patience, this never happens, no matter what difficulties they may experience.
