A person traditionally considered the head of the family - husband, father - exposes his household members to physical, psychological, economic pressure aimed at intimidating them, complete control over them, turning them into "whipping boys" on whom he can take revenge for his failures in social adaptation. Victims of a domestic aggressor always become weaker (physically or psychologically) than him, family members: spouse, children, elderly parents, disabled relatives under family care.

Thus, a distribution of roles arises: “rapist - victim (victims)”. The rapist in these relations is characterized by: a hidden inferiority complex; confidence in their right to use violence against domestic ones; low appreciation or complete inattention to their mental life; inability to control oneself, the need to overcome the frustration arising for any reason as soon as possible. With the complete non-resistance of family members to his actions, violence on his part increases: it is being committed more and more often and takes on more and more cruel forms.

Those who play the victim role tend to show low self-esteem; justify the actions of the aggressor; demonstrate confidence in the normality of domestic violence and the conviction that they have nowhere to wait for help. Often, even after being beaten, they do not go to law enforcement, having misconceptions about family relationships. In such conditions, domestic violence can continue for years, remaining hidden from others.
